Check out a very difficult 5 minute sermon
I’ve just posted up the tricky 5 minute talk I did at the cathedral family service on Ishmaels Songs YouTube channel if you fancy watching it. It’s of the talk I gave at Sunday’s 9.15 family service.
The Gospel reading presented a real Biblical challenge to prepare…but I always like to face up to challenges!
The Bible verses involved a drunken king who had seduced and run off with his brother’s wife, An evil woman full of hatred. An inebriated lad’s party involving an erotic young dancer. And it ended with the dancer being told she could have whatever she wished for so having sought her evil mother’s advice, she requested that an innocent man be beheaded and his head be presented to the party goers on a serving plate.
And yes, it’s one of the few Gospel readings that does not mention Jesus once.
Of course, you’ve guessed it’s Mark 6 and the account of the beheading of John the Baptist.
Every bit of the reading should have an 18 certificate There is nothing at all pleasant, uplifting or cheerful about it!
However, I think I just about got away with it by quickly skipping over the nasty stuff and majoring on the wonderful John the Baptist oh, and by singing ‘the statue song’ and ‘I know Jesus loves me!’
Would I use this Scripture for another family service? Of course……….NOT!!!!!!!
