The Parables of Jesus
I so enjoyed teaching Year 4 pupils last week about the miracles and parables of Jesus. Here are some photos of our session. I was so pleased that the children came prepared with some of the stories they had read in advance, and they posed some really interesting and thought provoking questions. We talked about the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. We have 2 ancient stone carvings in the cathedral dating from the 12th century that depict this miracle. The children were also fascinated that these carvings had been hidden behind the choir stall and not discovered until 1829. It was an interesting discussion to get the…

The Miracles of Jesus
This week I am teaching Year 4 pupils about the miracles and parables of Jesus. It has been so enjoyable for me to study and reflect on these subjects. Most Bible teachers I am sure would agree that teachers get more out of the amount of preparation that goes into teaching sessions than the students. But how to make Bible stories interesting for children can be a challenge! I always think that visual aids are important whatever our age, and I love to use art in various forms to teach the Bible. For example, we will be looking at Jesus’ first recorded miracle in John’s Gospel chapter 2 – The…

The Transfiguration of Jesus
In 2015 our son Joss completed a 3000 km trek walking the length of New Zealand. In 2016 he walked from Lands End to John O’ Groats. In 2018 he climbed all 282 of the Munros (mountains in Scotland) with a friend Peter. Through all 3 sponsored challenges he raised thousands of pounds for children’s cancer charities. His expeditions led him across rivers and mountain ranges and he said he felt a bit like Frodo in Lord of the Rings on journeys of epic proportions. Here are some photos to give you an idea of the mountain climbing challenges he met, not least the Black Cuillin Range on the Isle…

Happy Valentine’s Day?
Hi, on this page I will be sharing, reviewing, and recommending resources for children’s, family, and all-age, church-based work. I love to explore and discover new ideas, and creative ways of supporting this fantastic ministry. It’s such a privilege to serve the church and to help make worship meaningful and fun for children and families. I hope you’ll find my ideas and recommendations helpful. I am sure that many people will be celebrating Valentine’s Day tomorrow. The date stands out for me because 51 years ago Ish invited me to a church Valentine’s Party for our first date. It was memorable in that as a young woman, instead of the…

Hurrah! My New Book
Hurrah! Hardback copies of my new book arrived today, and I am very excited. Although I understand it’s not everybody’s cup of tea and it’s very expensive even for a hardback copy, it is based on my PhD thesis on children’s Sunday School literature and it took me several years of study. It is of course aimed at college and university students of history and theology, and hopefully their libraries will stock copies of both the eBook (which is slightly cheaper) and the hardback. Therefore, I am not allowed by the publishers to share it freely but here are a few brief facts to give you a little flavour: The…
